Senior athletes compete in five-year age increments; gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded in each category.
The Games were first held in San Antonio in 1990 with 525 athletes participating.
In an average year, the Games attract over 1200 athletes who participate in over 24 individual sporting events. Each athlete participates in an average of three sporting events.
Hundreds of volunteers from the military, universities, high schools, senior citizens groups, service organizations, retirement communities, and corporate sponsors assist at individual events throughout the competition.
In 1992, The Games were officially sanctioned (approved as a qualifying site) by the National Senior Games Association (NSGA) and the Texas Senior Sports Organization (TSSO) providing a safe, technically correct and fun environment for competition.
For the 21st consecutive year, the Games are coordinated by the Barshop Jewish Community Center of San Antonio.
